Kaleidoscope quilt

For a long time I've wanted to make a kaleidoscope quilt - even bought a special ruler a while ago - but never really dared to take on the project. That is until I read the pattern for Stephanie's Saltwater Taffy from Uncommonly Corduroy. The way the pattern is written suddenly make kaleidoscopes seems easy :)

Now my AMH fabric is sorted into bundles mixed with leftover Lark fabric and I'm ready to start cutting. Just need to figure out the neutral background. Maybe grey-grey, maybe linnen?

Done...

I finished Jens quilt today... Happy to report he's now a 11 year old happy camper with a quilt warm enough to replace any duvet even in the wintertime :) You know, they say everything is a phase. I'm wondering if this heavy-fleece-quilt is too. Maybe some day my kids will want to use a normal cotton quilt again?

This picture is just from when I finished the binding - it's a bit wrinkled and needs ironing.

15 day challenge... Yeah

The quilting is improving the overall look and feel. I'm going to make two more lines in each of the grey waves, but already now, the overall impression is slightly better.

Time is going to be an issue though. Tonight is midsummer - the longest day of the year. We celebrate with bonfires and staying up late, so quilting time is limited. I need to have this finished by Wednesday.

15 days challenge...3 days left.

The quilt is basted and I'm ready to start quilting. I still am not happy about my fabric choice and  layout at all, but it isn't hideous - just really messy.

Out of frustration I played a little with the left over hst's  and realised that had I taken the time to use the design wall, things would have been better. Oh well,  it's done and I feel too detached to my seam ripper to engage in a long term project like taking it all apart.

Lessons learned the hard way - I promise never, ever to skip the design wall again.

Here are the same colors set up a bit more clever...still a melange setting, but definately better.

15 days challenge update

Well, 5 days before deadline it suddenly dawned on me that I was in a kind off hurry. Like seriously kind of hurry. Work load didn't drop as expected and I also had a huge work presentation for a large external audience on Thursday (which went well, thank goodness). But all work things are now checked off my list and today I dived into the pile of fabrics and finished the top.

I'm not very happy about it to be honest. The colors doesn't really work their magic. I should have paid more attention to light/dark and not only greens and greys. This is what happens when you don't put much effort and thought into planning.  Lesson learned! I think the quilting will help accentuate the pattern and outline the waves there is (though hard to see in the pictures) - fingers crossed - if not I may just have wasted a whole lot of fabric and Jens won't get his quilt on his birthday.

Anyways, enough rambling... This is what it looked like at noon today

And how it looks now

It measures app 60x80.

Tomorrow I'll baste it and start quilting, I got Monday night to finish the quilting and Tuesday night to do the binding. That's doable, right?

15 days challenge accepted

Sorry I went off the grid for so long. I had a huge work project and has literally been working non-stop for the last two weeks - literally night and day. Meanwhile my poor Pfaff has been badly neglected and has been all covered up on my sewing table with an empty design wall as background.

However, there's light at the end of the tunnel and the worst is over. The launch went well and the project was well-received. So having slept most of yesterday away and catching up, today I counted the days until my youngest 11th birthday... 15 days!

And I realised that he really wanted a quilt to match his brothers http://my-quilts.blogspot.dk/2014/01/i-finished-longjohn-quilt-week-ago-and.html (which literally has replaced a duvet since January and is contantly being dragged to the sofa as well). Seeing the love Sven-C has for his quilt, how can I not grant Jens the same gift. He's really into very few colors right now and quite manly quilts. He keeps telling me he's NOT a princess... Like I don't already know  *big sigh*.

So it all comes down to this... I got 15 days to create something big, soft, boy like and wonderful for him.

Challenge accepted. I'm going for waves in grey and greens... I started off with a pile of HTS - still to be trimmed.

A lot of squares have been cut.

And I'm going with this pattern but bigger of course. Waves from Modern Neutrals by Amy Ellis.

Definatly a do-able project I think. I personally would have preffered a bit more playfulness and less strictness... But this one is for Jens and I think he will love this pattern. My littlelist little man :)
